96 Hours in St Martin

I was halfway through my last semester at Hamilton, when I did something extraordinary. At least for me that is. Although it was nearly April and “officially” spring, even though upstate Clinton, New York would not actually thaw until probably the week before graduation in mid-May; even then it had been known to snow on or before graduation. (We were often reminded of the great whiteout of ’62 by Dean McCain, that nearly derailed commencement that year). Our neighbors ten miles to the south, at Colgate, which was ironically in Hamilton, New York, seemed to relish the snow until its very last days. Although I thought anyone who attended the university (and who loved to boast that it was the story of the 1950s Colgate swim-team, that had laid the groundwork for Where The Boys Are, the seminal spring-break novel that established Ft. Lauderdale as a spring-break destination for nearly four decades), must be gluttons for punishment after my visit senior year of high-school and ascending the slopes of the hills that made up the entire campus. I decided I would rather spend a year working on a shrimp trawler than make my way up those hills every morning for class. But I digress.

It was March, nearly a week before Easter and mid-terms, and I was still recovering from the winter malaise, (as well as from a swollen knee that had developed from a harsh Lacrosse injury while practicing on the icy green), when I got a surprise email from my best-friend Dechen asking me to join him in St. Martin for the upcoming spring break. Deke had graduated the year before and decided in lieu of real grad school (he had deferred admission, much to his father’s chagrin, his admission to the MBA program at Harvard) to obtain that oh-so-useful degree at the LSE; affectionately known to the student body as the London School of Gin and Tonics and not so affectionately, (at least to the parents who paid the tuition) as a lame excuse of a master’s program whose sole purpose was to party it up in London for a year before pursuing a more serious track of study somewhere else… preferably at Harvard or Columbia. It was “fine” my father once said, “to attend a perfectly respectable liberal arts college as an undergraduate”, but he would “be damned if I didn’t attain at least an MBA from an Ivy League” and, “no Cornell and Penn don’t count,” he added.

I knew that I was never going to get my parent’s permission or their credit card to pay for the trip and I also knew that my winter break trip to Jackson Hole had worn my own plastic to the breaking point. I contacted the local STA Travel, which for reasons unbeknownst to me was able to secure absurdly low travel rates for college students to just about anywhere (this would become “beknownst” when the ticket I booked–Only $299!–Was on a packed to the rafters Air India flight enroute to Mumbai). I hastily packed, was on the next Amtrak to New York City, a shuttle to JFK and 36 hours later arrived on the sunny isle.

I felt a thrill of excitement at not having told anyone except my roommate Angus, who had replied in a haze of weed induced coughing, “Rad dude” and fancied myself as being on a Jason Bourne-type adventure, hoping to meet a dazzling red-head of Teutonic descent who would ultimately join me on my mission.

Having never been to St. Martin, I was overcome with excitement, an excitement that faded during the excruciatingly long, full, Air India flight. I barely had any elbow room and was seated in a middle seat in the middle aisle surrounded by what appeared to be a brood of twenty, all monitored by one very overwrought mother who was wearing a bright red and yellow sari, and couldn’t seem to control the SONY PSP carrying, crawling over their seats (and mine) litter of sons she’d sired. I stopped trying to read my Let’s Go: St. Martin and St. Maarten and dozed for what I thought was hours, until I looked up at the satellite tracking of our flight and realized we’d barely passed over Miami…

I grabbed a well read and crumpled copy of Vanity Fair from the back of the seat in front of me, excited momentarily by the promise of its cover (Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! With Shia LaBeouf no less!), when I realized that including the cover there was about four pages of Indy coverage, 20 more pages on the death of Princess Di (enough already), 10 pages of what appeared to be corpses dancing in a ballroom (Nancy Reagan, Besty Bloomingdale and friends) and an even scarier a profile of a couple who I decided must be raising the anti-Christ, Marie Chantal and Prince Pavlos of Greece. I finished the magazine, looked up and we were still somewhere over the mid-Atlantic… Good Lord.

Upon landing, I hastily made way past the curry smelling throng with their suitcases and ran for the taxi stand; where I learned upon retrieving my texts, Deke would be unable to meet me; he was stuck “tutoring” a rich Belgian–a contradiction in terms, if there ever was–girl English he’d met two days prior, but assured me I was to be met at the Cadbury Chocolate dispensing machine at the southwest exit by his roommate from LSE–and I’m not making this up–named Agamemnon. Agamemnon, a scion of the deposed Greek monarchy, had been raised in London and had attended the private Hellenic School of England. His parents in absentia of actual Greek citizenship resorted to naming their kids after ancient Greek mythology. Picturing a burly and bearded spear-throwing monarch out of 300, I was surprised by the diminutive and light-on-his-feet dark haired pixie of a kid I finally met.

Aggie, as his friends knew him and if his non-stop chatter was any indication, there weren’t many; was more than happy to show me around the island while Deke was pre-occupied as it were. Although annoying, he was more akin to a Jack Russell Terrier and relatively harmless and once slightly tuned out, actually a bit endearing with his dark crop of raven-black hair (think Milo Ventimilglia in HEROES season-one), cartoon-like large black eyes, big red lips and gleaming white teeth all on a head that appeared too big to be supported by his small skinny frame.

After dropping off my bag at their rented, er, flat, Aggie and I spent the entirety of the afternoon roaming the French side of the island. All the while “Common People” by Blur was all that was running threw my jet-lagged brain. I finally stopped while we were walking past the throngs at the beach side shack/bars and suggested we grab a drink at one of the local bars, er, pubs as he reminded me. “A pint!” Aggie exclaimed, a little too gleefully, “why of course!”

A few hours later and sufficiently inebriated, we made our way back to their place, where still after a flurry of texts I’d received no word from Deke. Aggie, despite the copious amount of alcohol he’d ingested still chattered away and I longed for an off switch. The apartment was spare, mostly IKEA and empty of food or drink. I sank into their sofa, my head pounding from the combination of drink and Aggie. I put the palm of my hands into my eyes and held them there, holding back what I felt was an impending headache of a magnitude I’d not reached in quite some time. I was miserable, I still hadn’t seen Deke, was beginning to feel guilty for not calling my parents and Aggie was hardly the dazzling Teutonic red-head I’d anticipated, I felt less and less like Jason Bourne and more like an extra on Little Britain. “I’m the only straight in the village,” I thought to myself over Aggie’s chatter, which made me laugh, and coincidentally–and thankfully–apparently dovetailed with a joke he’d just made. That’s when I noticed the ferry schedule lying on the coffee table.

I saw my escape. I quickly excused myself to the bathroom, “The Lieu!” Aggie exclaimed giggling wildly. Glancing at the ferry schedule I saw there was an outbound leaving for Anguilla in an hour. Escape! I perused the guidebook for a cheap room or hostel and decided I would book a room on the train, came out of the bathroom, and told Aggie to tell Deke I’d be back in a few days. I grabbed my bag and dashed out before Aggie could speak. I was Jason Bourne again and I was on the move.

turks-and-caicos

Composed of 40 islands, eight of which are inhabited, the Turks & Caicos, invite island-hopping and exploration. Unspoiled natural beauty and lovely beaches balanced by world-class shopping, golf courses and dining, attract knowing travelers from around the world.

Here’s our list of the eight Turks & Caicos Islands, great and small, that are not to be missed.

  1. Grand Turk, the capital of Turks & Caicos, offers a glimpse into Caribbean history with great Bermudian architecture and a rustic charm, as well as some of the best diving around.
  2. Once the center of the Bermudian salt industry, sleepy Salt Cay has about 80 inhabitants and wealth of history, with spectacular whale watching and the region’s most exquisite coral reefs.
  3. Middle Caicos offers experiences of pristine nature, with lush green woodlands, limestone cliffs overlooking sandy beaches, remains of Indian settlements and the biggest cave network in the Caribbean.
  4. Because of its abundant rainfall, North Caicos is the lushest of the islands. It also has the largest flock of pink flamingos, as well as great bird watching in its extensive nature reserves and sanctuaries.
  5. South Caicos, or The Big South, is the fishing capital of the Turks & Caicos, and has its best natural harbor and wonderful seafood dining, with lots of locally caught lobster and conch. The sleepy little town of Cockburn Harbor has hosted royalty and rogues throughout its rich history.
  6. Uninhabited West Caicos is a favorite for picnics and dive operators, with sandy coves and beautiful waters. Its Lake Catherine a nature reserve is home to a riot of bird life.
  7. Also uninhabited, East Caicos is covered by swamps and mangroves and a 17-mile beach on its north coast attracts sea turtles, who come to lay their eggs.
  8. We save the best for last: Providenciales, or Provo as it is called, is the most developed island, a bustling destination that offers all the modern conveniences. Home to world-class shopping, golf courses, restaurants and spas, Providenciales provides plenty of activity and entertainment. To unwind by surf and sand, simply head to one of the island’s beaches. The best are on the north shore, near Grace Bay.

The best luxury villa properties are located in Provo, in exclusive private estates, surrounded by sweetly scented tropical foliage. They feature stunning seaside views, luxurious interiors and exotic architecture with a distinctly West Indian ambiance. They also serve as an ideal base for exploring the magnificent islands of Turks & Caicos.

Visiting Marseille-Provence To Celebrate Capital of Culture

It’s a great time to visit Marseille and Provence, so plan your trip now. I will be the first to admit that Marseille is not near the top of my list when I think of “must-visit” destinations in France, but when it comes to cultural significance, Marseille certainly has a colorful history worthy of exploration. If nothing else, it’s a great city to visit while taking advantage of the many day trips to the picturesque villages of Provence. Personally, I feel that these villages complete with hospitable locals, delectable cuisine and many hidden treasures are the true treasures of this region. Marseille has been working feverishly for several years to complete many improvements and enhancements to this famous city on the sea in an extensive revitalization effort. With miles of coastlines and charming villages within a very short distance by train, a week being able to live like a local in a beautiful villa can provide a quintessential Provence experience.

Celebrating The Capital of Culture:

Marseille and the region of Provence are fortunate to be celebrating a year filled with over 400 cultural events as they commemorate being one of the Capitals of Culture. For 2013, this honor is shared with Košice, the economic and cultural center of Slovakia. For visitors and locals alike, the very impressive lineup by Marseille and Provence throughout the entire year will allow for an inventive journey of exploration; celebrating the past, present and future. 97 towns and communities have come together to collaboratively prove to the world that Marseille and Provence have earned their place among the impressive list of cities that have been able to call themselves the European Capital of Culture since it was created in 1985 to strengthen togetherness within the European Union.

In Marseille and Provence, the year has been divided into 3 programs, but maintains the centralized theme of “The Mediterranean: The Narrative Of It’s Two Shores.” Part 1 of the program has just come to a close, and was a very successful beginning to this year’s celebration, as the theme was aptly titled, “Marseille-Provence Welcomes The World.” Part 2 has just kicked-off, and will continue until September with the theme of “Marseille-Provence Under The Stars.” Many events occur under the starry skies with locals and tourists coming together to celebrate throughout the entire region. Part 3 is titled, “Marseille-Provence of a Thousand Faces,” and will wrap up the year from September to December. This part of the program celebrates togetherness and recognizes the many faces that have influenced this region. Regardless of when you visit during 2013, you’re sure to have endless opportunities presented, allowing you to fully embrace and appreciate this region.

Great Day Trips From Marseille:

Aubagne: Located just 10 miles from Marseille and the Mas de Provence villa, you feel you’re a world away from the metropolis when arriving to this picturesque village. This area is very proud to be the birthplace of Marcel Pagnol, the writer and producer who glorified and popularized Provence. The farmers markets here would be difficult to replicate with this region’s amazing produce. With so many local offerings, the items most sought-after remain the honey, olive oil, goat cheese and Pastis Janot.

Gardanne: Located just 16 miles from Marseille, Gardanne is not a destination if you’re looking to be with a lot of tourists. However, if you’re looking to mingle with the locals in an industrial city that has still maintained a great deal of true-life charm, this is a great afternoon getaway. Beautiful fountains, small city squares and tiny streets of mystery make Gardanne a uniquely local experience.

Aix-En Provence: Located just 20 miles from Marseille, this is one region that is worthy of several days to savor the lovely Provincial lifestyle. Known for their magnificent fountains and love of art; the chateaus, gardens and village life will leave you wanting to simply pause to savor the moment. Here they pride themselves on family-style comfort foods made with the freshest of ingredients grown in this region, which are then paired with the local wines of this area called The Vineyards of Aix en Provence (including grenache, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and notably vermentino). Not a bad combination!

Bon voyage!

Three New Superyachts Worth Discovering

With more than 100 luxury yachts on display, the Monaco Yacht Show is the world’s ultimate superyacht event. From September 25 to 28, the world’s moneyed elite strolled Monaco’s famous docks in hopes of finding the superyacht of their dreams.

The Monaco Yacht Show attracts some 500 luxury brands, built at the world’s best shipyards. At the booths of Feadship, Lürssen, Heesen, Oceanco and Perini Navi, serious enquiries are made about bespoke superyachts. Such a vessel is both an artistic expression of the owner’s vision and the results of careful planning and execution by a team of skillful craftsmen, designers, architects, engineers and others. It can take up to five years from the first meeting between architect, shipyard and owner before the yacht sees its first wave. Building a superyacht requires both patience and, of course, a healthy bank account.

So how does a shipyard catch the attention of someone who has both the means and desire to build a new superyacht? By asking owners of recently built yachts to offer private tours to the select few.

Among the many superyachts on display at the recent Monaco Yacht Show, here is our shortlist of those that stood out.

Motor Yacht Galactica Star – 65 metre – Heesen Yacht

Motor-Yacht-Galactica-Star

Recently chartered by Beyoncé, this private superyacht sports a groundbreaking (or wave-breaking) Fast Displacement Hull Shape and a stylish hydrodynamic design that reduces the yacht’s impact on the environment by up to 30 per cent. With a cruising speed of 24 knots and a top speed of 28.8 knots, this ship is a marvel of both engineering and design.

Motor Yacht Quattroelle – 86 metre – Lürssen

Motor-Yacht-Quattroelle

Despite its massive size, Motor Yacht Quattroelle is stunningly beautiful and elegantly designed. The funnel, reminiscing of an air scoop of a Formula One car, emphasizes the sporty look of this new Lürssen masterpiece. Her interior is best described as “eclectic contemporary” and entirely customized. With six decks to choose from, guests can easily find a hidden nook to unwind in utter peace and quiet

Motor Yacht Chopi Chopi – 80 metre – CRN

Motor-Yacht-Chopi-Chopi-

Boasting an exterior design by Studio Zuccon International Project and CRN Technical Office, and an interior design by Laura Sessa Romboli, Motor Yacht Chopi Chopi was admired by all who walked along her imposing 80-meter hull. Serviced by a crew of 30, the vessel can host a maximum of 12 guests in six elegantly designed cabins.

The Monaco Yacht Show was a hit among both the rich and the rich in training. Anyone who missed show can still admire a myriad of superyachts in Florida, from October 3 to November 4, at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Aquatic fantasies need to be fed.

An Interview with Chris Christensen from Amateur Traveler

IMG_1618-XL

So far in this interview series I got to talk to Dave Levart (traveL is his last name) as well as traveler, entrepreneur and actress Kimberly Fisher. Our last interview was with Johnny Ward, who gave one of best answers I’ve gotten to the question, “How do you manage success in travel?”

This of course, can be different for each person. However, this line of work is a lifestyle. If you are more interested in things and or money there are better jobs out there. I measure success a number of ways as it relates to my travels and travel site. Pursuing something that you are passionate about and sticking with it and seeing it grow – whether it is income, the number of visitors or other opportunities that result – is certainly success.

This week I got the chance to talk to Chris Christensen from Amateur Traveler. Chris has been doing travel podcasts, almost always interviews with other exciting adventurers, and now he answers some questions of his own.

1) Do you remember April 2006, just under a year after you started your podcast? It was the month where you got into National Geographic. How did it feel when you saw your name mentioned? What were some other big moments for you and Amateur Traveler?

I do remember 2006 and getting into National Geographic Traveler. Getting promoted by main stream media seemed like it should drive a lot of traffic but usually makes little difference. It made a bigger difference the times that iTunes has promoted Amateur Traveler.

Big moments include being told that Amateur Traveler is used to teach English as a foreign language at Oxford University or being called one of the 10 best travel sites on the Internet by the Chicago Sun Times.

itunes-amateur-traveler

2) I loved running into other travellers overseas. There’s a shared spirit of adventure. A lot of your podcasts have included  fellow travellers. How has being tied to the travel community influenced you?

I now have friends all over the world and it has been fun occasionally meeting up for tea in London or getting a tour of Mexico City by a former guest on Amateur Traveler. One of the cool things about junior high school was finally being in a large enough school to find there were other kids like you. The Internet is like that, but even more so.

3) I believe you’re currently working as an executive in the tech startup world; how has that affected your travel lifestyle?

It might be a bit hard to keep up with my career. I left my day job at a Silicon Valley startup company at the end of August and now work for myself. But I will be working part time for TripAdvisor, my former employer, to pay the bills while I start my own company and software as a service website, BloggerBridge.com, which helps industry representatives connect with bloggers like me.

I made this change to have more flexibility for travel, and have four weeks of trips within the next two months. Trying to find the time to travel and the money to travel is an interesting puzzle to solve, especially for someone like me, with a wife, a house and a mortgage.

4) You’ve been doing this for a little over eight years now; that’s a lot of travelling, podcasting and interviewing. What were the biggest ups and downs in the process?

headshot3I started Amateur Traveler in July of 2005. The first time I was promoted on iTunes I was at the first podcasting conference and my site went down from the traffic. You have those sort of minor problems. Sites being hacked, advertisers going away, traffic coming and going with the seasons.

Cool highlights have been my first press trip to Cozumel, the Amateur Traveler photography tour to Egypt (just before things blew up there), the eight months I took off to work on Amateur Traveler full time in 2010, and trips to Maui, Lanai, New Zealand, etc.

5) You’ve mentioned that you used to follow 70 podcasts before starting your own. Do you still follow some? Any favourites that you’d like to recommend?

What I have been saying is that I used to follow 100 but have scaled back to 70 last I counted. I counted again just now and that seems to have gone up to 126. It may be time for an intervention. The number rises and falls as I get tired of ones or they stop publishing or as I discover new ones.

I got started pretty early so I don’t know any travel Podcasters who started before me and didn’t know any travel bloggers back in 2005.

I was influence by other Podcasters, notably This Week in Tech, one of the first podcasts.

6) Zig Ziglar once said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” Do you have any especially vivid memories of struggling with motivation?

Every week. It is quite common after I put out a weekly episode of Amateur Traveler to say to myself, “Well one more week that I didn’t quit.” My goal has been 48 shows a year with four weeks off and I was surprised at the eight-year anniversary of the show that I was pretty close to that. I have averaged a show every eight days. It helps that I don’t do the show by myself anymore. For the last two-to-three years I have had an editor who does five of the eight hours of work that a typical Amateur Traveler episode takes.

7) You’ve been covered in a lot of press and done all sorts of interviews before. I feel like there’s always one question you wish someone would ask, but the question never comes. What’s that question for you?

As good looking as you are, when you travel do you have to beat the women off with a stick?

Surprisingly no, more people seem to like me for my sense of humor 😉

If you enjoyed this, you can also check out our last interview with Johnny Ward!

Avignon, City of the Popes

$

While the popes have long made their home in the Vatican that has not always been the case. From 1309 to 1423, following a schism between the French crown and papacy, a series of popes and illegitimate popes made their home in Avignon. Today Avignon is one of Provence’s biggest draws, with its mix of historical and cultural attractions.

avignos-palais-de-popes

The capital of the departément of Vaucluse, Avignon is one of the few French cities  to have preserved its ramparts. In  walled, medieval Old Avignon, the 800 year-old stone fortified ramparts run unbroken for 4.5 kilometres. Shaped like a rhombus, the historical part of the city is bordered on two sides by the might Rhône. Its cobbled streets are lined by boutiques and among the most famous of its leafy squares is Place de l’Horloge, framed by glamorous Hôtel de Ville and the Opera, and filled with cafes that are a perfect place to people watch.

When it’s time to eat or imbibe, head to Rue des Teinturiers. This sloping cobbled street lined by trees and a canal is one the loveliest, most atmospheric places in the city. It used to be where  Avignon’s textile manufacturers worked their trade and now is home to many affordable restaurants and drinking spots.

avignos-streets

Appropriately, the City of the Popes still boasts the Palais des Papes (Popes Palace), a Unesco World Heritage Site and planet’s largest gothic palace. With a surface area of 15,000 square meters and towers rising 50 meters into the air, it is one of the largest medieval buildings in Europe, complete with battlements, vaults and sluices for dumping boiling water on intruders. While its interiors are fairly bare, you can see the 14th-century chapel frescoes painted by Matteo Giovannetti, the elaborate walls of the pope’s bedroom and the medieval hunting scenes in Chambre du Cerf.

Also worth a visit is Pont Saint Bénézet, or Pont d’Avignon as it is know in the French nursery rhyme. Built in the 12th century, the bridge was often damaged by the flood waters of the Rhône. Repairs stopped in the 17th century and 18 of its 22 original arches have been washed away or collapsed. Still it is an impressive structure and offers views of the city, its towers and further down the bank of the river to the satellite town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

Another way to immerse yourself in culture is to visit some of city’s many museums and galleries.  These include Place du Palais, with its world-class collection of Italian Renaissance painting; Musée Calvet,  offering art in an 18th century mansion; Musée Angladoni, with its collection of  Picassos; Collection Lambert, for contemporary art fans; and Musée Louis Vouland, with its fine porcelain and antique furniture.

For contemporary culture, the city’s biggest draw is Festival d’Avignon. The annual performing arts festival, running for three weeks July and August, takes over the city with plays in venues such as the Palais des Papes and numerous performances on the street. Theatre, dance, readings and music are all part of the mix.

Chateau d'Avignon

To really get into the mood for the City of Popes, why not stay in a villa that once hosted bishops waiting for audiences with His Holiness? Today the spacious Chateau d’Avignon has been refurbished with all the modern conveniences and includes a swimming pool and patio. LaCure has a full selection of villas in Provence, so you can sample its culture, history and cuisine in a style sure to receive your blessing.

Why Be a Tourist? Live Like a Local

What is the ultimate travel guide? Perhaps no guide at all…

Conducting research online, which is certainly the most common practice, presents all kinds of complications.

TripAdvisor is by far the leader online, collecting volumes of user reviews. But, when scanning through, don’t you get the feeling that many voices have their own motive?

Professional advisors including Travel Agents and other travel authorities are a great option. A much more objective perspective, Travel Agents rarely have uneven incentives to suggest A over B.

Time permitting, why not set out on your own unique adventure?

  • Don’t read anything online!
  • Grab a map
  • Sketch out a route that covers a comfortable distance
  • Keep it safe! Explore areas that are not too far from the beaten path

1

Especially when in Europe – cities like Venice, Barcelona, Paris – it’s so easy to follow the crowds. But the typical result is dealing with long line-ups, overpriced food & drink and often not the best quality.

To capture an authentic experience, you want to find that concealed local kitchen, a watering hole where residents gather for happy hour or a gallery where prices are not based on tourist demand.

Taking a bit of risk, getting lost and meeting friendly strangers is the best way to establish your own authentic travel guide. Try it!
